On 30 December 2008, three Chinese steel companies -- Tangshan Iron and Steel Co., Handan Iron and Steel Group and Chengde Xinin Vanadium and Titanium Co. -- agreed to merge, creating the biggest listed steel maker in China.

Sandvik Materials Technology has announced that it is to reduce the time lag on its alloy surcharge model for seamless tubular products. The change will come into effect from 1st January 2009 when the rates from 16th November to 15th December 2008 will be debited.

State-owned National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Co. (Tehran) is in the process of setting up seven refineries across the country at an aggregate investment of USD 21 billion. The refineries, all of which are scheduled to begin operation by 2012-13, will increase Iran's refining capacity of crude oil and gas condensate by 1.57 million barrels per day (BBL/d) and gasoline production by 110 million liters per day (LPD).

In 2004 Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd (Sumitomo Metals) developed SMICORE (SMI Crude Oil Corrosion Resistant Steel), a steel plate with enhanced corrosion resistance for the upper decks and bottoms of crude oil tanks in oil tankers, which are exposed to severe corrosive conditions.

Sandvik has reached an agreement to acquire BTA Heller Drilling Systems Ltd, a producer and supplier of deep hole drilling products, located in Cirencester, UK. The acquisition is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2009, after approval by relevant anti-trust authorities.
